Top 5 Holiday Decorating Tips from an Interior Designer
I’ve been holiday-obsessed for as long as I can remember thanks to my mom, who made it her mission to make every Christmas magical.
Adorably (and maybe a little insanely), “Santa” still visited well into my twenties…
The holidays look different for everyone - whether it’s Christmas, Hanukkah, or another gathering, whether you’re celebrating with a big group or just a few close ones. Personally, I’m lucky to have friends who share my holiday enthusiasm and a family that still celebrates together each year.
Decorating for the season can take many forms and doesn’t need to be an expensive Hallmark-style extravaganza. I like to keep things simple yet festive - a way to embrace the chilly months ahead and create a warm atmosphere focused on quality time with loved ones.
When I decorate, I choose a general theme and refresh my décor by combining pieces I already own with a few new touches.
Tiny me, big Christmas energy.
My 5 Holiday Decor Must-Haves:
(1) Wreaths
Please go for a 100% real wreath - it’s a quick way to bring nature into your space, and you can find them almost anywhere.
For a budget-friendly upgrade, start with a basic pine wreath and add your own natural elements, like seeded eucalyptus, to give it an elevated look.
The same applies to garlands! And while I prefer all-natural, I make one exception - a bow. Just keep it understated and elegant.
Need inspiration? Here are some lovely wreaths to spark ideas.

Ribbon tip: MOKUBA has an incredible selection if you love ribbon shopping. It’s easy to go overboard there, so keep it focused - choose just what you need to make a special impact.
(2) Garlands
Adding garland along a bannister, sideboard, mantle, or doorway instantly brings a cozy winter feel to any home style. Keep it simple and natural, so it complements your space without overwhelming it. Think of it like adding a plant - festive, yet subtle.
I stick to classic styles, and these examples will give you the timeless looks I love.

(3) Gift Wrapping
Let’s talk wrapping paper. Whether it’s going under a tree, a Hanukkah bush, or just waiting to be given, every year, I pick one theme and run with it. I love wrapping gifts as I get them, building excitement and adding to the décor in the process.
Some favourites: Brown paper - it’s as chic as it gets and incredibly affordable. For a personal touch, add simple string or ribbon, or hand-write names right onto the wrapping.
When picking wrapping paper, consistency is key. You don’t need just one design, but try choosing a cohesive colour palette and mix scales of patterns and ribbons for visual interest.
For example, consider using all velvet ribbons in varying widths. Or, if you’re sticking with one paper, try mixing ribbon sizes. This keeps everything looking put-together without needing to match your entire décor.
One rule: No words on the wrapping paper! Avoiding script keeps things timeless and lets your other decorative touches shine. If you feel like it might be from Hallmark, it probably isn’t very chic and you can definitely do better. This year, I am thinking dark and moody hues - with pops of bright and saturated ribbon.

(4) Candles
The holidays are all about cozy vibes, and nothing says cozy like a warm fire. While a wood-burning fire isn’t always practical, candles make the perfect stand-in.
Keep it simple with classic shapes and varied sizes, layering them in with your usual decor. It’s an easy way to add a festive warmth to your space that feels effortless yet inviting.

(5) Trees
For my Christmas lovers - let’s talk trees! I’ve never been one for matching ornaments or a perfectly colour-coordinated approach. To me, your tree should be a collection of ornaments that mean something to you - let it be a true reflection of your style and memories.
If you can, go for a real tree; find one that feels like you and enjoy all its charm leading up to Christmas. Watching everyone’s unique tree personalities come to life is one of my favourite parts of the holiday season - it’s what makes each home feel so wonderfully personal and festive.
